Audio advice on Win7 needed
« on: December 28, 2009, 06:32:07 PM »
Hi folks,

I'm on my new Win7 laptop, looking in Control Panels > Hardware and Sound > Sound and looking at the separate Playback and Recording tabs for my headset (earphones and microphone headset). Same headset as I used with my previous laptop running Vista. Whole new interface with Win7. I'm hearing a slight latency/delay when I turn on "Listen" so I can monitor myself as I speak/sing for recoring audio. It's almost like I'm my own backup singer/announcer. But annoying if I want to monitor my voice for audio productions...or even for singing and playing air guitar/drums. ;) Any suggestions? I've tried "Default device enabled" and setting it to the specific headset. I don't see any control to adjust a delay/latency issue. I'm also getting a lot more sensitivity than with the old system. It's like the mic is picking up every sound at all in the room, and the audio sounds like it's a huge room or talking in a well. I don't see any controls to adjust that either. I'm not getting any noticeable reverb/feedback/squealing, so I don't think I'm picking up from the ilaptop's own internal mic. Any suggestions would be welcome, as this is annoying/frustrating. I don't want to turn off the "listen" monitor playthrough, but I may do that, which I did last week. This is at the OS level, before I even get to Audacity. I don't see how to correct for it within Audacity either, but that'll be where I'm actually recording to. (Audacity 1.3.10 beta.) No video involved here, just audio recording.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Mods, if this needs to go in another forum section, such as the Podcasting section, please move it. :) Thanks.

I would make sure that you have the latest (i.e Windows 7) driver installed for your headset.

Thanks. :) This evening, I'll check the drivers and fiddle with the settings some more.

Definitely check with the drivers. I had to get a completely new sound card for Win7 because neither my onboard, nor my old Creative Soundblaster would work in Win7. I finally for the SB working with some "rogue" drivers someone created but I ended up getting  A LOT of static in Win7 whereas in WinXP the card worked fine. I just bought a new card instead and now everything works like a charm. So, depending on how old your card is, it may just not work with 7.
